The Stalls of Barchester Cathedral by M.R James (Book review)

This short story collection from one of the masters of classic horror writing includes these ghost tales from across his career:

  • Mr Humphreys and His Inheritance
  • The Rose Garden
  • The Stalls of Barchester Cathedral
  • Oh, Whistle, and I’ll Come to You, My Lad
  • The Ash-Tree
  • The Haunted Doll’s House.

All quite similar in tone, they’re classic ghost stories meant to be read out loud in front of the fire, which I literally did with the last two!

The Whistle one was my favourite, it had a unique premise and creepy atmosphere. The Doll’s House was probably my least favourite, it seemed a bit harder to follow.

I appreciate the timelessness of these stories and the classic horror plot devices: magical cursed objects, murder and witchcraft, retellings of old legends, the threat of the domestic setting gone wrong.

Read if you want some classic thrills and want to enjoy some fireside stories.
