My Evil Mother by Margaret Atwood

This was actually a bit of fun! A novella/short story by Atwood about the funny yet sinister suburban mum who is documented through her daughter’s eyes. It’s great to see a witchy story of this genre again! I grew up in the era of Sabrina, Charmed etc. Supernatural in suburbia!

Like a lot of what Atwood writes, it’s razor-sharp and psychologically compelling. Pulling you into the story right from the beginning, it’s a great read and one that also made me feel weirdly nostalgic.

There’s a wonderful way in which the ominous coexists with the everyday here. A few “hang on” moments…. Atwood is a master at making connections between the “supernatural” and human behaviour. Plus, I love these types of “not perfect” mother stories.
