We Solve Murders by Richard Osman

As a fan of Osman’s work, I was curious to see what he’d come up with next with this new murder mystery series—and I have to say, We Solve Murders was a pretty good read and sets itself up nicely for the continuation of the series! A great, easy read.

This book introduces an intriguing cast of characters and dives into the action much more quickly than The Thursday Murder Club. The story revolves around an unlikely duo: Amy, a sharp security services agent, and her father-in-law Steve, a retired policeman now well into his slower-paced life. Despite their differences, the two end up working together, embarking on a globe-trotting adventure full of murder, intrigue, organised crime, and some genuinely touching (borderline cringe) moments.

The book has the feel of a modern murder mystery with plenty of movement and action. It reminded me of some recent films in the genre that combine fast-paced storytelling with emotional beats.

While it might not be the most profound or introspective book out there, it’s entertaining. The central mystery is well-paced.

I particularly enjoyed the dynamic between Amy and Steve—they’re both emotionally reserved characters, and their interactions offer moments of comedy and warmth. Their awkward bond brings a nice dose of comic relief.

Although I’d say this book is a bit less emotionally rich than The Thursday Murder Club, it’s still a solid and fun read. Richard Osman clearly has a strong handle on this genre, and I’m definitely looking forward to continuing with this new series.

One word: whirlwind.
