The Aguero Sisters book on a shelf

The Agüero Sisters by Cristina García

For lovers of magic realism, this is a beautiful story of sisters, desire, family, Cuba, and nature. I devoured this book on holiday and felt totally immersed in its world.

You get to hear many perspectives in this novel as you travel across the decades, and you will muse on how the political affects the personal and vice versa. There are so many themes and topics in this rich novel, but there’s also a compelling narrative force. You don’t feel like anything is there “just because “ – it all helps build the fabric of the story. And yes, on some level, it’s also a mystery novel.

The descriptions of desire, food, and Cuban flora and fauna are excellent and make you really want to savour the writing.

A book that is life-affirming and gripping, but also defies easy categories.
