The Pumpkin Eater by Penelope Mortimer

So, this was an interesting, punchy book! Love discovering a new writer like Penelope Mortimer: this was my first read from her.

The Pumpkin Eater tracks the internal musings and emotional journey of a woman who has a nervous breakdown.

Overrun by children, married to an indifferent man, stuck in her life, this is the kind of story where even if you can’t relate at first, you end up getting sucked into the narrator’s point of view. It’s not as dark as you’d maybe imagine, but it’s definitely thought-provoking.

It’s a type of domestic horror that makes you shudder, and a powerful reminder of how far we’ve come.
