Think you know the story of Oedipus? Think again! Here we have Jocasta’s and her daughter’s point of view of the shocking and gruesome tale. And in fact, this book is more about emotional journeys, about things that happen between palace walls and in bedrooms, not about grand mythical tales. The writing and characters make you forget the bigger framework- you just want to know how the women end up.
I liked the exploration of the city state mentality, the way the book explores how power corrupts, and the descriptions of Ancient Greek girlhood.
Another great read from Natalie Haynes – wholeheartedly recommend her books for fans of Madeline Miller and lovers of all thinks Greek mythology!
