This one was an easy read, a thriller set in the Fens where a couple running busy lives and three children must confront a dark secret from one of their pasts. It’s about trauma, secrets, power, and rewriting your story.
There are some features that make this thriller unique: not a hetero couple, older children, a dark cult past.
I loved the descriptions of the place and there’s a cozy atmosphere to their family lives that’s disrupted by darkness. Relatable family and relationship dynamics are coupled with some more surreal flashback elements.
I enjoyed the exploration of control and indoctrination.
Great for a holiday or beach read.
One word: frisson.
