A novella that follows a lonely Friday summer evening during which Cathal leaves his Dublin office, takes the bus home, and wanders around his place, thinking about Sabine.
Sabine, the woman he’s about to marry.
But what actually happened between them? Is Cathal really ready to marry?
Poignant and partly comic, this novella is a great read and a very insightful psychological tale of self-sabotage. It’s sad but doesn’t wallow. Like all of Keegan’s work, the descriptions cut straight to the point and you can easily imagine yourself there.
Cathal is a complex and sometimes unlikeable, always human, character.
One word: morose.
