The Guest Cat by Takashi Hiraide

The Guest Cat by Takashi Hiraide

Last review of the year!

This was a really sweet & short book. Constructed as a series of vignettes, this story maps out how a visiting cat transforms a young couple’s life. A very cute premise and the story is filled with lovely details about the cat and the garden. It is very well-observed.

Living in a unique guesthouse on a larger estate, the couple are both writers and spend a lot of time at home. They get to know their neighbours a bit, but it’s their cat who they really bond with. There’s also a “big house” and the writer couple end up taking care of the big garden and the main house once the elderly couple living there need some more support.

Interesting references to the economic history and property market of Japan. There’s also some interesting observations about boundaries and grieving.

One word: sweet.
